Loving Care Hospice and Home Health has been a dedicated health care provided in our community for almost two decades. When Loving Care Hospice and Home Health was founded in 1993, only two full-time employees and a handful of volunteers ran this Christian-based agency. Today, Loving Care Hospice and Home Health employs more than 50 employees. The agency’s nurses, aides, social workers, clergy and volunteers are trained and adhere to the Hospice philosophy of ministering to the needs of the dying and to their families with dignity, compassion and respect.

Since Loving Care Hospice and Home Health is in fact a not-for-profit organization, care may be provided to people who are unable to pay when the need arises. Last year alone, Loving Care provided more than $130,000 in non-reimbursed care to our community thanks to the generosity of those people who donate money, make bequests or support our fundraising events.

Loving Care is dedicated to providing quality care to those in need in Madison and Union counties. This agency affirms that each life is precious.

After retiring, Marilyn Knox, a volunteer at MCH, decided it was a good time to get healthy by exercising at the Madison County Hospital Wellness Center, located in the Park Avenue Medical Building.

Marilyn Knox, a volunteer at Madison County Hospital, joined the MCH Wellness Center five months ago and has already lost 24 lbs.

“My doctor told me I needed to get my sugar under control and that exercise could help,” Marilyn says.

According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for American, adults need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of aerobic activity each week and muscle-strengthening activates on two or more days. Exercising can decrease your risk of heart attack, stroke, hypertension, some cancers, osteoporosis, depression and obesity.

For the past 28 years, Marilyn worked as a deputy clerk at the Madison County Municipal Court. She retired last October and after spending the winter reading books, she decided it was time for some activity. Marilyn and her husband Don joined the Wellness Center in February.

“Exercising at the Wellness Center gets me out of the house,” says Marilyn. “I visit with people and we encourage each other.”

Visiting the Wellness Center every day Monday through Friday, Marilyn walks for 30 minutes on the treadmill, and uses the recumbent bike and abdominal weight machine. She has already lost 24 pounds, and her physician has said that her sugar level is now under control.

“I’m flabbergasted that more people don’t use the Wellness Center,” says Marilyn. “It has everything you want. I feel much better since I started exercising and now feel I can keep up with my six grandchildren.”

The MCH Wellness Center is open to the public for anyone age 18 and over. It is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call (740) 845-7275 for more information on membership fees or to schedule a visit.

While out shopping in Madison County, you may have noticed a clear box with a pink sign full of coins on the counter. Or, you may have seen a pink brochure while visiting the local library.

For a little more than a year, businesses have been supporting the Madison County Hospital Foundation’s breast cancer initiative by displaying donation boxes and educational materials. The items not only help raise money for the initiative, but also raise awareness about the importance of early detection.

As many of our Madison County friends already know — and I’ve continued to use the phrase to elicit sympathy from Brenda in the days since — “I coulda died, ya know.”

But the dedication of Madison County’s health caregivers refused to let that be an option for me.
